The Loch Raven Network has a new name…
Student Support Network, Inc.
From Laurie Taylor-Mitchell, President, Student Support Network, Inc.:
Our vision is coming into fruition in several ways: first, we have grown to three schools adopting our program and have renamed the organization the “Student Support Network. Second, we are continuing our advocacy through speaking to groups about the problem of poverty in Baltimore County Schools. Third, we have organized two successful drives targeting donations to non-Network schools, so that they can see what is possible when engaged communities become involved in with helping students in need. With nearly 50,000 students living in severe poverty, and 86 schools in the County with poverty rates over 50%, there is a lot of work to do.
Each school will keep its own network under the financial sponsorship of the Student Support Network (SSN). We hope that by changing our name and broadening the potential scope that many more students in need will be served and that there will be more opportunities for grants. In kind and monetary donations can still be designated to a specific school in the network or now be made available to the greatest need among the three schools.
On April 20th and 21st, the SSN held a Spring Donation Drive here in the Fellowship Hall of St. Thomas’. It was a huge success! Volunteers from 16 county schools plus Empower4life and Food for Thought re-ceived generous donations from the community and the support of over 40 volunteers.
Many thanks to Keith Payne and Jenny Moulton who joined SSN volunteers to set up the Fellowship Hall for the donation drive. We couldn’t have done it without you! We also appreciate the work that Donna Lettow and Jenny did on Saturday to set up and stock the storage room in Room 8. They did a tremendous job! We are now able to store supplies that will be needed at the member schools but for which the schools don’t currently have storage space.
Jan Bahner will be coordinating efforts for the storage room. Do you have an hour or two a month that you would like to donate to sorting items in the storeroom? Please contact Jan at firstname.lastname@example.org to sign up.
St. Thomas’ recent donation drive for toiletries for Parkville High was also a huge success! Many thanks to Beth Crosby for coordinating this drive!
In June, we’ll once again collect donations for back to school backpacks for homeless students who will enter Loch Raven High School in September 2018. We’re looking for a co-chair for this outreach effort and shoppers who can purchase supplies with monetary donations we receive. And then on a Sunday in July, we’ll come together after our morning service to pack the backpacks! Details about the backpack drive will be in the June Good News. Please contact Jan Bahner (email@example.com) if you are interested in working on this outreach effort.
From the students and families served by the Student Support Network, THANK YOU for your support!
