Blessing of the Animals

A white shitzu dog looks up alertly. The Blessing of the Animals is a tradition in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.  Here at St. Thomas’ the Blessing of the Animals is held on the Saturday closest to October 4, the feast day of St. Francis. Pets of all sorts and sizes receive special blessings, acknowledging their love, loyalty, and companionship.

Some churches, such as St. John’s Cathedral in New York, invite the animals and their owners into the Nave for a service and blessing. We prefer to have the service on the patio. Come, bring your furry or scaly friends, and receive God’s blessing.
