"First" Communion & Confirmation

“First” Communion

Would you like your child to know more about the Eucharist? First Communion classes are offered after church for a four-week period, culminating in our First Communion Service. First Communion teaches a child about sacraments, about Holy Communion, and the practicalities of how to receive communion.

In the Episcopal Church, children are allowed to receive Communion after Baptism. Therefore there is no age requirement for First Communion classes. The parents decide when their child is ready to receive communion. To attend, your child must be baptized and at least one parent or godparent needs to attend the four classes.

Confirmation

The Rite of Confirmation is intended to be an adult affirmation of the vows spoken by parents for children at baptism. In other words, in Confirmation, a young person or adult has the opportunity to say “yes” to the actions taken on his or her behalf when he or she was baptized as an infant.

Confirmation instruction is offered for those who are entering 8th grade or older, usually once a year. The start date depends upon when the Bishop’s visitation to the parish will be. Classes are done with the confirmand and a mentor, so that each person has a guide through the study, and a sponsor for the Rite itself.
