This morning I went to the dentist to have an old filling replaced. I do not like going to the dentist. I had in my mind all the memories of having my teeth filled – the drilling, the paraphernalia filling my mouth, the long hard pushing of the metal stuff into the tooth, and of course the Novocaine. I still think that this procedure is going to last over an hour and be really uncomfortable, if not outright painful. But modern technology has changed dentistry, as it has changed so many other things. My procedure took less than a half hour. There was nothing at all to be anxious about.
Sometimes our anxiety is caused by “old tapes” – memories that come back to haunt us, as we recall something that happened long ago. But often, these old tapes play memories of ways that no longer exist. We become afraid because of something we’ve gone through in the past. But when we go through something similar now, the process is different, and we find we needn’t have worried after all.
I hope that in this STEP process, we can find ways to reduce our anxieties for the future; yet I know there is much that we are concerned about. I hope we will hold on to who we are – St. Thomas’ Homestead-Towson in the midst of all of this, even as we look into partnership with Epiphany. We have many strengths as a church that we can be proud of, and one of those is the fine people that make up this community. I hope we can find ourselves enjoying this process, and the joys and challenges it affords us. I believe that, no matter the outcome, we will be a stronger church because of it.

Collect for Partnership
Almighty God, whose Spirit hovered over the waters of creation, we thank you for crafting within us the desire for new life and greater ministry, as we explore partnership with Epiphany (St. Thomas). Guide us by your Holy Spirit into new community, new possibilities, and new hope for the future. May our minds be stayed on you, and what you desire to accomplish through us. May we remember that you are always present, and always faithful. We ask this for the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
