We have seen and heard of some terrifying weather the last two weeks as we have watched the news, or listened to the stories of people we love who have been caught up in Hurricane Harvey or Irma. Our daughter Francesca evacuated Houston, but her apartment is fortunately unharmed. But a park she and I visited in early August is under water up to the treetops. For many people, this will be a long, difficult rebuilding process. Please continue to pray for those who were in the paths of these devastating storms, and pray for the churches who are either under water, or helping those who are.
On a personal note, last night Steve and I adopted a dog, a VERY shy dog named Benni. We hope she will eventually take our beloved Stella’s place as the “church dog,” but right now she is very afraid of people. I’d appreciate your prayers (and advice!) for dealing with this dog who must have gone through some terrible trauma in her young life.
Parish Life continues into the fall, as we begin new programs in October: First on the list is a small group Steve and I are leading called “Something More.” Currently it is set for 5:30 on Sunday evenings. If we have people come and the majority of people prefer a better time, we will change it. This group is open to all who desire a deeper walk with God, and who want to explore the gifts of the Spirit found in I Corinthians chapter 14.
Second, we are beginning a group called Theology on Tap that will meet Monday evenings at the Raven Inn at 7:00 pm. Over brew, and beverages we will meet for theological reflection – a chance to look at an incident or reading or other topic through the lens of theology: How does God intersect with this? Where do we see God at work? What might our actions be? It will be fun, relaxing, and hopefully a place where people can bring friends to join us. Theology On Tap begins October 2.
Third, EfM begins September 26 at 6:30 pm. We have six, perhaps seven people involved, and this year we will have groups studying the Old Testament, New Testament, and Theology. Its a great way to build relationships, study the Bible, and see how God might be at work in our lives.
Fourth, Confirmation begins the week of October 15. If you have youth 12 and up that want to be confirmed, join us for a meeting on Monday September 25 at 7:30 in the Counting Room. We’ll fill you in on our new program, Confirm not Conform.
And finally, Children’s Ministry is getting a shot in the arm, thanks to the hard work of Nicole Zollickoffer and Tracey Daniels. They have taken on a new Sunday School program for Pre-School and Elementary ages that will meet during worship. The children will rejoin their families during communion. I am so thankful they are doing this! Anyone want to join them?

Jesus, I am resting, resting
in the joy of what thou art;
I am finding out the greatness
of thy loving heart.
Thou hast bid me gaze upon thee,
and thy beauty fills my soul,
for by thy transforming power,
thou hast made me whole.
